Wallpaper trends and tips from Gary James:
I am seeing a renaissance in the use of woven grassclothes, linens and burlap-type weaves. There is something called “Madagascar Cloth” that looks like bold tropical matting that I have installed three times in the past two years, in an entertainment room, a home office and a dining room. I would say this is the biggest upsurge in weaves since the late seventies.
A client selected a fabric from Raoul Textiles in Santa Barbara, who manufacture screen print fabrics locally. This will be used in a hallway, however is too thin to be installed as is without the hazard of paste staining, so we have had it paper- backed by a laminating service in Los Angeles.
In addition duplicating technology has reached a point where a person can take one, or several photos (collage) into a shop such as Nu Image Signs and Graphix in Goleta and have a custom-sized wall mural printed on heavy vinyl stock. I recently installed one comprised of early Santa Barbara surfing photos, for a beach house home gym.
I also remove existing wallcoverings and wallpaper with the minimal amount of time and wall damage possible. Walls can be prepared to receive new wallcovering or scrubbed clean to receive a fresh coat of paint.
