“I don’t know if the beauty of Santa Barbara inspired me to paint the landscape or if landscape painting had me love Santa Barbara, but the two attractions grew together. Santa Barbara has an unusual geography, which produces a unique character of light and a rich resource of material for the painter, which has kept me painting here for 30 years. From the beginning it has been the light that has interested me” Schloss explains.
“The objects in my paintings, the trees, cliffs, hills and water, are only there as vessels to hold and reflect the light which is the real subject. As such I am most drawn to the early morning and late afternoon hours when the substance of objects gives way to the fleeting play of light and atmosphere on their surfaces”
