The story of Arte D’Italia Imports began in the 1950’s when Ben Spalluto, a native of Castellana Grotte, Italy came to the U.S. and married his wife, Carol, a resident of Santa Barbara, CA. The couple soon discovered that they shared the love of fine Italian ceramics.

Patrick Turner captures softly illuminated landscapes and seascapes that reveal sculpted trees, rock formations and architectural elements in slightly mysterious, dream like sequences.  Turner explores the natural world with a thoughtful appreciation for silence and persistence in his black and white photographs.  The artist observes that humanity… “came alive on the flat plains, the jagged peaks of rocky mountains, amongst the tangle of forests and along the gentle sweep of rolling hills.”

A selection of Turner’s exquisite editioned prints from the series “Quiet Light” will be presented at the gallery, representing both traditional film and digital techniques.  The essence of specific places is portrayed through an exploration of light and shadow, informed by a contemporary sensibility.

In the artist’s words, “We hold inside an ancient and profound recognition of… nature’s textures, spaces, line and form. For the ancient Greeks, this underlying pattern of nature was at the heart of their appreciation of life and beauty - what they honored most and what eventually became the foundation for much of the modern world’s perception of beauty.”

Patrick Turner’s professional career spans over 30 years as a photographer.  After graduating from San Jose State University with a degree in TV/Motion Picture Production in 1977, he pursued a successful career in the entertainment industry.  For many years Turner was Director of Photography at the prestigious Lucas Films’ Industrial Light & Magic, which continues to set the standard for visual effects in the film industry.

He is currently the owner of Patrick Turner Photography, specializing in black and white fine art photography since 2007.

Casa del Herrero (House of the Blacksmith) is filled with art, antiques and furniture collected by the original owners, and surrounded by extensive gardens. Designed by noted architect George Washington Smith and completed in 1925, it is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture in the country.

90 minute walking tours include the home, gardens and owner George Fox Steedman’s meticulously ordered workshop, all preserved in circa 1930s condition.

New Directions looks to find the newest ideas in contemporary photography and this years topic of visual discussion is the place where form and content fuse, intersect and enhance the ideas of photography.

Ms. Klomp Ching talks about in her statement -

Considering the photograph as both image and physical artifact is of fundamental interest within this context. In selecting the photographs for this exhibition, I was particularly concerned with showcasing photographic artworks that demonstrate a marriage between the chosen subject and the manner in which they were either made or finally printed and presented.

In this exhibition we see examples of the ‘unique object’ in the work of Odette England, Laura Wulf and Heidi Kirkpatrick, a direct concern with photography’s essential components - whether that be light, chemicals or time for example, as evident in the work of Harold Ross, William Miller and Brook Reynolds.

Meanwhile, we see a resurgent exploration of alternative processes in the work of Tami Bone, Daniel Dean Palmer, S. Gayle Stevens and contemporary contributions to photo montage in the work of Collette Campebell-Jones. Whilst Zelda Zinn and Norishisa Hosaka embrace digital technology to make images, artists such as Bryan David Griffith, remind us of the seemingly simplicity of the monocular view of the camera.

Art is not produced in isolation of the social/cultural times in which it is made, this is aptly demonstrated in the seemingly straightforward work of Photographer Hal, Greer Muldowney and Cathrin Shulz.

Together, the photographers in this exhibition demonstrate and impressive and imaginative use of photography’s old and new tools to push photography to its very limits, whilst maintaining the integrity of the photograph itself.

The eatery’s name is a tribute to Jane Moody, the matriarch of a Santa Barbara restaurateur family. Her photographs grace the walls and the menus and her name was given to her granddaughter, manager Jane Chapman.  The family also owns the Montecito Café, a longtime favorite with locals. Both restaurants emphasize quality, value and service.

“My family has been in the business for twenty-five years. My father is chef at both restaurants, Mom works at both places and my sister is a server while she is going to school. On any night we could all be in the house.”

All the burgers are made from ground, hormone-free sirloin and served on homemade sesame buns. Pneuma will present a diverse range of figurative works and portraits of Santa Barbara artist James Petrucci. Petrucci’s paintings are realistic and thoughtful portrayals of his close friends, his children and family.

These compositions are depicted with a realist aesthetic while also experimenting with loose impressionistic layers marking the surface of the bodies and faces.

James Petrucci is a self-taught artist born and raised in Santa Barbara. He has worked and exhibited extensively in Phoenix Arizona. In 2005 he attended a private residency with artists Elias Rivera and Susan Contreras in Santa Fe and in 2009 was a William T. Colville grant recipient.

Petrucci is one of three artists who received The Arts Fund’s Individual Artist Award in 2011. These awards annually identify and reward artistic excellence in Santa Barbara County. This solo exhibition, along with a cash prize of $2,000, is part of the award.

Now in its 24th year, the celebrated program has awarded over $168,000 in cash prizes and showcased over 135 artists in the visual, literary, and performing arts. Funded entirely through private donations, the IAA is an important component in sustaining artistic vitality in the community.

The exhibition was made possible through the generosity of Christine and Robert Emmons.

Prior to establishing his design studio in Santa Barbara, Taylor lived and worked throughout the South of France. Taylor’s extensive training includes a degree from the prestigious Abbe’ Boisard Institute of Design followed by a coveted apprenticeship with renowned French Ebeniste, Jean-Michel Cathiard.

The following attractions are within easy reach:

Reclaimed wood is used for custom tables and salvaged metals are incorporated into lamps and decorative pieces.

The brothers started out in the antique business nearly a decade ago as movers at their mother’s antiques store. This early entry into the business stimulated their interest and love of hunting for unique vintage and antique pieces. Later, forays into various construction trades provided skills for designing and manufacturing quality furniture, lighting and accents for the home.

“For us, quality is not only a measure of a completed product, but of the process and materials that go into making it. We love re-purposing found objects and industrial bases for our tables, lighting and accents.  We believe that the every day items are part of our American history. Things that were used to help make our daily chores easier, or  that were “the latest thing” from generations past still have a place in today’s story, yet are often so easily discarded in our throw away society. If it has a story to tell, we will find a way to reinterpret it for a new generation. We do all this through sustainable building practices and using low impact finishes, paints and other materials” the brothers explain.

The prehistoric looking “Vertebrae Lamp”  was created from a length of a conveyer belt.

The Brothers are enjoying a growing reputation, and have started working with several designers in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.  Their tables & lighting have found homes all across the country, due to their growing online business. They do however, feel very strongly about supporting and building local business, especially in today’s economy, and made sure that their workshop would include a showroom and a place to meet Santa Barbara clients. They also show at California Flea Markets and travel to popular trade shows nation wide.

Designing custom furnishings and decorative pieces for clients and  interior designers is high on the brother’s list of goals for the growing business, along with creating an assortment of lighting fixtures that will be readily available at the Carpinteria showroom.

This makes perfect sense since Annie was a longtime art instructor at Cold Spring School. Whether you’re inside or out, each blink of the eye reveals something unique: a glass pendant’s glimmering reflections; a wood-beamed ceiling’s snowflake motif; a Gaudiesque iron balcony’s changing patterns.

“There really isn’t anywhere that you’re not looking at some delightful detail or another,” she says gazing down at the black and white swirls in the floor tiles of the entry hall.

“We wanted to have people come in and feel as though they’re walking on a bed of flowers,” she says.

But the final product was no accident. The house is the careful creation of architect, Jeff Shelton, whom Annie first befriended along with his wife, Karin, while teaching art to their daughters, Elena and Mattie, at Cold Spring. In Paul and Annie’s estimation, Jeff creates pure joy. His architecture, they believe, demonstrates his clear understanding of design coupled with his appreciation of the very human need for humor and playfulness.

Consider for example, the interior courtyard, which reminds one of a Spanish village. Shelton’s design has yielded a space that is at once cozy and bright, like a plazuela you’d come across in Andalusia. Says Annie, “The patio is so inviting that everyone who visits gravitates there even though we have this amazing ocean view just steps away on the front terrace.” And though the architecture is unmistakably Shelton’s, the de Bruyn Kops’ home, like his other projects, maintains its own identity.

Here, Shelton called upon the unique talents of his trusted stable of artist contributors. His brother, David, designed and fabricated the ironwork; Saul Alcaraz crafted the glass shades; Andy Johnson created the limestone sculptures; and Tom Cole conceived the landscaping. Supervising it all was David Kruger of Dan Upton Construction.

As fortune had it, added to the creative mix were the de Bruyn Kops. Both retired, Annie and Paul were free to devote many hours to the enterprise, choosing the various tile patterns and working with Saul on the light fixtures.

A few steps away, in Paul’s office, twin blue and white striped serpents coil their way across the floor. “We have nine grandkids,” Paul says, “and they love coming in here and tracing out where the snakes are going to end up.” He admits that Annie was a little “nervous” about choosing to make each space so distinctive, “It’s a house not a collage,” Annie laughs.

But looking back, the couple wouldn’t have it any other way. For rather than vying for attention, the numerous textures, colors and patterns, including their grandkids’ paintings, play off each other so seamlessly you can understand why Annie and Paul ascribe fantastical properties to their residence.

The team effort clearly paid off, both in terms of inventiveness as well as speed. The project took only 12 months to complete—from June 2009 until June 2010. Good thing. The house was intended as the couple’s fiftieth anniversary gift to one another, which took place on Flag Day of 2010.

As for living in a larger than life sculpture, Annie says it’s a perfect fit. “Our lives have been about art for a long, long time. Since Jeff is dedicated to making beautiful things, he responded to the fact that beauty was our number one priority as well.”

The Birth Center provides a comfortable, family-friendly environment offering private rooms with queen beds, birthing tubs, bathrooms with walk-in showers and a fully-equipped kitchen.

Women will be attended by the same midwives throughout their pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum, assuring the highest-quality continuity of care.

The Santa Barbara Birth Center midwives are licensed and certified women’s health care practitioners, trained to care for healthy women with low-risk pregnancies.

They work in consultation and collaboration with obstetricians, neonatologists and pediatricians. Midwives have very low rates of medical intervention and cesarean sections.

The midwifery model of care focuses on client education, informed consent, evidence-based practices, and time-intensive, individualized prenatal care.

The SBBC will offer culturally competent care with the option of a Spanish-speaking practitioner or translator when needed.

The birth center was designed from the ground up as a place that supports normal, spontaneous physiologic birth that includes these features:

-The freedom to move about without being attached to a monitor.
-All newborn exams are done at the bedside without separating mother and baby.
- The option of using birthing tubs.
-Patient may have as many family present as desired.
-Setting is a comfortable room that feels like home.

Monitoring of the baby’s heart rate is done carefully and consistently but in a very unobtrusive manner by handheld doppler. No routine interventions such as mandatory IV starts or any set positions for pushing and birth are required.

“The hospital is wonderful when an increased level of medical care is needed. We are  grateful for the excellent care they provide in those situations. But many women are understandably concerned about their chances of having a normal birth in a high-tech environment,” Birth Center Director Laurel Phillips explains.

“A birth center is a missing link in perinatal services in Santa Barbara and exists as part of a continuum of services available. There will always be women who want to birth at home, and there will always be women who will need to birth in a hospital due to underlying medical conditions and high-risk pregnancies.”The birth center has transport protocols that allow a smooth and seamless transfer of care for a woman who needs an increased level of medical care in labor and the immediate postpartum.

Construction on the Birth Center was recently completed.

The company’s residential projects have been featured on the PBS television show This Old House, in Sunset Magazine, Seasons Magazine and Santa Barbara Magazine, and in local newspapers. Shaw graduated from UCSB with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies with an emphasis in California flora and vegetation.

The landscape of the home is “a unique example of the use of California native plants in a contemporary landscape design. The effect is stunning,” Shaw said. “Most people think native plant landscaping is simply a wildflower garden, drought-tolerant shrubs or creating a meadow-like backyard. This landscape is different.

“The geometric lines and use of bold swaths of native plants, cut flagstone, slate, gravel and natural boulders blend seamlessly into the strolling paths that wind through the native oaks on the property. The result is a landscape that is both ecologically sustainable and incredibly beautiful.”

The Santa Barbara Beautiful awards was presented to the honorees during a ceremony Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 at the Music Academy of the West’s Hahn Hall.

“You see cement tiles all over Spain, France, Italy and Mexico”, Shelton says. But you might not realize that they are not your usual ceramic tile.”  Shelton currently has  over 30 tile patterns in his line and creates new ones frequently, sending his hand-drawn designs to Original Mission Tiles in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, who manufactures the tiles by molding pigment-colored cement.

Beautiful and durable, they cost much less than baked ceramic tiles.

“Most of our designs are asymmetrical, which distinguishes them from many tiles and allows them to be arranged in any way” Shelton explains.  “Well designed patterns  fit a room, a mood, an atmosphere and come in any color you desire. I recently completed a house and all the tiles throughout were custom: owls, chickens, leaves and quails.” Past designs even included a grunion- inspired pattern.

The de Bruyn Kops house features pointed arch tiles on the risers of an outer stairway and rose tiles on the interior stairway risers. Terracotta and white leaf-zagged tiles occupy the heavy traffic area of the kitchen floor; the pattern repeats in yellow and white on the kitchen walls and in black and white on the floor of a sitting room.

“Some of my designs are botanical and geometric; some are Persian-Moorish in origin, I suppose, but I don’t get too reverent about anything. I’m not making a great historical document here. I’m just having fun and creating spaces” Shelton comments.

The fire burned thousands of acres, and destroyed hundreds of homes. Enter Margie Grace, who assessed the damage and came up with a fire-resistant landscaping plan that made the most of the home owner’s hillside property.  Beautiful walkways were cut into the hillside, stabilizing the earth and creating planting beds.

Not so long ago, a few of us met through Girls Inc. and became girlfriends.  One day we were sitting and chatting about the importance of friends, family, fun, adventure, meaningful work — and giving back to the community.  Out of that conversation, and united by our love for Girls Inc. and its mission, the idea for the GirlFriends Club was born.”

For the first time, the GirlFriends Club is providing ongoing opportunities for volunteers to work with Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara girls. As a member, you will create memories with your girlfriends that will not only enrich your lives, but forever touch the lives of our girls.

GirlFriends Club membership features two members–only components:

GirlFriends for Girls Inc. Girls — Club members will have the unique opportunity to have fun with our girls by participating in a variety of creative, interactive volunteer activities.

Because we believe the footprints we leave in the hearts of so many girls makes an indelible mark, we thank you from the depths of our own hearts for being such a treasured girlfriend to the thousands of young women Girls Inc. serves in our community every year.  Your commitment touches and inspires each of us to be stronger, smarter, and bolder!
