This 1,379 SF remodel is lean and green without expensive bells or whistles.Remodeling has respected the original design’s essential qualities – dynamic indoor-outdoor spaces with abundant natural light, natural ventilation via jalousies and “Santa Barbara” doors, and an efficient plan that allows for intimate and large scale entertaining.
The original quirky post & beam structure with single wall redwood siding or single glazing
above a 6’-8” high continuous 2×6 plate remains intact in its boulder-strewn site.
What makes it green?
• Modest square footage and conservation/reworking of the existing structure is
inherently material and energy saving.
• Additions for Master Bath and Storage are minimal saddlebag pop-outs hung
under existing eaves without foundations.
• Existing high windows bring in low winter sun for passive heating; new operable
skylights ventilate in summer.
• 50’s plywood kitchen cabinets are renewed with color and hardware; new
appliances are energy efficient.
* New tops are natural (slate) or recycled (terrazzo tiles).
• Flagstone patios expand interior; drought tolerant landscaping minimizes water
use.
• Garden/kitchen waste is composted and recycled on site.
Respect, conserve, extend, and renew were the design bywords for this cost
effective mid century remodel organically wedded to its rocky setting.
